Vietnamese traffic is chaotic at best, but there’s a method in the madness and it’s easy to navigate through on your motorbike when you know the road rules.
Vietnam is not the place to learn to drive a motorbike. you must have riding experience to rent one of our bikes.
The traffic looks like a free-for-all, but it’s not. There are fixed rules. They are just a different set of rules than the ones we are used to. Not that drivers don’t sometimes break the rules. The big difference is that in Western countries, a traffic light is just a suggestion and all intersections should be approached with caution.
The informal rules of the road
a.) Larger vehicles have right of way. Whether they are approaching from behind, or they are in your lane passing another truck, a larger vehicle will take it for granted that you know how to fend for yourself and get out of the way. Knowing how to control your bike, slow down and if necessary, pull off the road.
b.) Do not stop to ‘be polite.’ Any clear space you can move forward into is fair game, and the drivers behind you will expect you do it. Stopping unnecessarily will cause accidents.
c.) Drive slowly and in control, use turn signals and make your intentions clear to others, they will drive around you in most cases.
d.) Speed is the main reason for accidents, even if you are in the quiet country road keep a safe speed and be prepared to stop. People enter the road without looking, it is your responsibility to drive safe. It is assumed any accident is your fault regardless of the circumstances.
e.) Do not drink and drive.
We strongly advise all overseas customers to obtain travel insurance before they arrive to collect their motorcycle. You should have you own health insurance coverage that covers driving in Vietnam, while international quality health facilities are available in Hanoi and HCMC, health care services in the countryside is of a lower standard. District towns have health facilities that include emergency, x-ray services and can help you deal with a minor accident, they will except payment at the end of treatment.
